The best Mother’s Day flowers, and why mums love them
Australia has its own Mother’s Day flower, but the best choice is always the one that suits your mum. Here is what each flower brings.
Australian tradition
Chrysanthemums
Australia’s Mother’s Day flower. They bloom in autumn, just in time for May, and the name ends in “mum”. They are also among the longest-lasting cut flowers.
Carnations
The original Mother’s Day flower. Anna Jarvis handed out white carnations, her mother’s favourite, at the first Mother’s Day in 1908. Pink and red now stand for a mother’s love.
Pink and peach roses
Pink roses say thank you and admiration, which is exactly the message. Save red for romance and go for blush, pink or peach.
Tulips
Cheerful and modern. Tulips keep growing after they are cut, so they lean and curve over the first few days, a nice surprise for a mum who notices.
Lilies
Big, open and fragrant, lilies make a generous gift. If Mum has a cat, choose another flower, as lilies are toxic to cats.
Natives and keepsakes
Proteas and banksias last well and dry beautifully. Dried arrangements and ceramic pots stay long after Mother’s Day is over.
A note on chrysanthemums: in Chinese and several other Asian and European cultures, chrysanthemums, especially white ones, are funeral flowers. If that is part of your mum’s background, choose roses, carnations, tulips or lilies instead.

Top up the vase daily and change the water every two days. For boxes, top up the water source if there is one.

Trim a centimetre off the stems on an angle every few days so they keep drinking.
